QLD Waves
The IMOS Coastal Wave Buoys QLD sub-facility is based at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and maintained by the Queensland Government Hydraulics Laboratory (QGHL). QGHL is the cornerstone of the Queensland Government’s efforts to enhance coastal resilience and understand marine dynamics, having established an extensive wave monitoring program beginning in 1968. Situated along the coastline, the array of 24 wave buoys plays a crucial role in filling the observational gaps left by other data collection initiatives, providing comprehensive wave data. These buoys, a mix of advanced technologies (Datawell Waverider, TriAXYS, and SOFAR Spotter buoys), are strategically placed to monitor wave conditions.
The team at QGHL, led by John Ryan and Grant Millar, ensures the success of the wave monitoring program and is supported by skilled technical staff.
To support wave monitoring in Queensland, QGHL collaborates with nine different partners across the wave network.
